CONFIDENT CAPTAIN – AT THE HELM TRAINING PRESENTS: NEWPORT INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW HANDS-ON BOATING COURSES

There is nothing more valuable than hands-on training to make you a better, safer, and more confident boater!

Take the helm of a powerboat or sailboat with a professional USCG-licensed captain who will lead you through engaging lessons and give you strategies to help improve your confidence and ability and make your time on the water fun. All experience levels are welcome. You will never feel pressured to buy a boat because Confident Captain instructors are professional captains, not boat salesmen. The courses are offered all four days of the Newport Boat Show for both powerboat and sailboat, and are open to all boat show attendees. We recommend registering online in advance as these courses are limited and sell out quickly. See below for more details.

2018 POWERBOATING COURSES:

Come aboard one of our powerboats with a professional captain and boating ambassador who will help you enjoy boating while developing confidence at the helm. Get on the right track to becoming a knowledgeable and skilled power-boater with this 90-minute, on the water, hands-on course.  

Learn to:

  • depart the dock safely
  • use onboard systems and equipment
  • safely navigate and “buoy hop”
  • understand “Rules of the Road”
  • handle emergencies underway
  • obey local, state and federal regulations while boating
  • use the VHF Radio….
  • and more!

  • avoid the marina neighbor that pulls out in front of you!

Learn to:

  • motor with forces such as prop walk, prop wash, wind and currents
  • master tough maneuvering situations like upwind, downwind, and crosswind scenarios
  • operate with confidence in close quarters and in most weather situations
  • maneuver and cruise at high speed
  • control trim and speed to handle waves, swells and wakes

2018 SAILBOAT COURSES:

Join Confident Captain at the Newport International Boat Show for Hands On sailing courses. At The Helm sailing courses are taught by professional sailboat captains with significant sailing experience in both inshore racing and offshore cruising/racing. 

After completing this course, you’ll understand how a sailboat works, the common commands used to steer and some basic sailing terminology. You’ll not only get the most out of your time on the water, but also be able to actively participate in the magic of sailing! All participants will helm and crew the boats!

Learn

  • Basic sailing terminology, parts and functions
  • Helm commands
  • Basic sail trim
  • Buoyage, seamanship and safety.
  • Wind awareness, basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards

Educational Classes

UNITED STATES POWER SQUADRONS (USPS) – AMERICA’S BOATING CLUB SEMINAR SCHEDULE

United States Power Squadrons (USPS) – America’s Boating Club is offering classes For Boaters, By BoatersTM in boat handling, navigation, boat maintenance, weather-related subjects. United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club serves as a virtual “yacht club” with boating and social activities for all types of recreational boaters. With over 27,000 members organized into 356 local clubs across the country, America’s Boating Club is comprised of families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education. The courses are offered all four days of the Newport International Boat Show and are open to all boat show attendees. We recommend registering online in advance as these classes are limited.  Please note there is no cost for these courses.

2018 USPS CLASSES:

Weather makes the difference between a great day and a lousy day on the water. Recognize and prepare for whatever weather comes your way. Learn to recognize the early signs of changing weather; how to anticipate storms, squalls, fog and wind shifts; and become familiar with basic weather elements and how they affect your boating experience. 

Day/Time: Thursday & Friday: 11:00 AM – 12:00 noon || Saturday: 10:00 – 11:00 AM

AIS is now common on recreational vessels as well as commercial craft. AIS can help you navigate crowded waterways easily and safely by identifying other vessels’ location, course, speed and closest point of approach. You can even know the vessel name for communication if necessary. Learn AIS functions, how it can help you and basic use of AIS information.

Day/Time: Friday: 1:00 – 2:00 PM || Saturday: 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM  || Sunday: 10:00 – 11:00 AM

Modern marine VHF radios provide boaters the best and most reliable communication on the water. VHF radios provide DSC functions to quickly obtain help in an emergency. Learn about current radio features, how to use them for both routine and urgent communications, and how they can send your identification information to the Coast Guard in an emergency. 

Day/Time: Friday: 2:30 – 3:30 PM || Saturday: 1:00 – 2:00 PM || Sunday: 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM

Don’t get lost in the fog. Learn how Radar works, how to use it effectively and its use and limitations as a piloting aid. Understand Radar basics – how to interpret the data presented, collision avoidance, target identification and mitigating rain and snow effects. 

Day/Time: Thursday: 1:00 – 2:00 PM || Saturday: 2:30 – 3:30 PM || Sunday: 1:00 – 2:00 PM

Understand the issues and problems involved with anchoring, such as anchor types and sizes. Learn proper anchoring techniques and tips for your area. Understand how to use scope, chain and catenary, and proper anchor setting. By understanding anchoring conditions and situations, you’ll protect your boat and get a good night’s sleep on the water.
